In this issue, we have an overview of the new school IPM rules and how they will impact your district’s IPM program. Just in time for back to school, our guest writer, Dr. Scott Ludwig gives a brief overview of what an IPM program should look like for your Ag program – pass this on to your Ag Science teachers.
During the summer the Structural Pest Control Service Advisory Committee met, Dr. Merchant gives us a brief rundown as to what happened during the Sunset process for TDA and what other new rules will be coming out of Austin.
Finally, you should have received your brochure announcing the Statewide IPM Coordinator Conference to be held in San Marcos, Nov. 18 & 19th. This meeting is for you, your pest control contractor and anyone involved in your IPM program. The newly formed Texas Integrated Pest Management Affiliate for Public Schools (TIPMAPS) will be holding their first meeting after the conference and will be recruiting members – we want you to be with us.

It’s our pleasure to announce the winners of the 2008 IPM Pride Awards, read about how Klein ISD topped all other as the exemplary school district in the state.
With the coming of changes to the school IPM rules in Texas, it is time to prepare for your Structural Pest Control Service inspection. Do you have all your records in place, read up on what you will need the next time an inspector comes to call.
Finally, school IPM around the country is starting to really heat up. There is a national initiative to have every school in the country by 2015 adopt integrated pest management. In this edition of the School Pest News, we have included several stories about school IPM from around the country.

In this issue, there is a very nice write up on the newest ant pest – the Rasberry Crazy Ant. Just in case you didn’t know, if you suspect that you have this ant, Dr. Roger Gold is requesting that you let his office know that you have this species. They are collecting data for the Crazy Ant Task Force.
The first ever-statewide school IPM coordinator symposium has been announced. Guess speaker Dr. Bobby Corrigan will educate us about rodent control on school property. This will also be the first ever meeting for the newly formulated school IPM Coordinator Association. Read how you can become involved.
Are you a new adopter or a lager? If you like to keep current, read about the latest blogs that are available to you to learn more about specific pest problems.
There is also information from U.S. EPA on their agreement on organic arsenicals, see what this will mean if you use MSMA.
The 2009 School IPM Coordinator training schedule has been announced, see where the closest training will be to you this year.

In our final edition of School Pest News this year, we have an interesting article on an alternative way to eliminate American cockroaches from a school campus. Learn how Keller ISD utilized Trap GuardsTM as a way to keep cockroaches from crawling up from the floor drains. In this edition of the School Pest News, you will find several articles to assist you with your IPM program. Recently I had the opportunity to discuss bid contracts with Dr. Al Greene, IPM coordinator, for the U.S. General Services Division you can read about what he recommends in a pest control contract. Dr. Merchant contributed several articles for this issue. It’s time to bait for fire ants – are your ready? Have you had problems with spiders and/or mosquitoes – learn from the expert on how to react to these pest problems. Does your program struggle with threshold numbers learn how you can determine these thresholds and incorporate into your program?
You’ve heard about the IPM Star program, but did you know there is a program for pest control companies called Green Shield Certified? Texas not only has two IPM Star schools, but Express Pest Control in McKinney is now Green Shield Certified.
Finally, the school IPM team is growing we now have limited support in the four major urban areas. Learn who your contact is in your part of the state for help with indentifying pests and implementing your IPM program.

In this edition of School Pest News you will find a lot of information. Last year Texas AgriLife Extension decided to put two schools through the IPM Star Certification program, read all about how Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Plano ISD won their awards.
Speaking of awards, it is with great pleasure to announce the IPM Pride Award program is open for applications. You can now apply online as well as obtain PDF version of the application from our office.
We are also looking for IPM Coordinators to join a steering committee to organize the first ever IPM Coordinator symposium and professional association. Read how you can be involved.
Under the Letter to Expert section we have inserted stories about some of the new insecticide products that have recently been released. Dr. Merchant gives some excellent information about these products.
Finally, Dr. Merchant has taken the opportunity to explain some of the proposed rule changes being put forth by the Texas Department of Agriculture. This is a very in-depth story that is worth the read. In addition to the public written comment period mentioned in the story, TDA will also be hosting public hearing in Austin as well. The Texas Department of Agriculture (department) will hold a public hearing to take comments on proposed amendments to the Structural Pest Control Service rules, Title 4, Part 1, Chapter 7, Subchapter H, Divisions 1-6, as published in the July 4, 2008, issue of the Texas Register (33 TexReg 5141). The hearing will be held on Monday, July 21, 2008, beginning at 2:00 p.m., in Room 1-100 of the William B. Travis State Office Building, 1701 North Congress, Austin, Texas. We hosted several Extension Specialists from neighboring states, along with Dr. Tom Green, IPM Institute, Al Greene, Governmental Accounting Office, architects, engineers and school facility and maintenance directors at our offices here in Dallas. Dr. Merchant has researched this topic and shares his insights with us. MRSA it has been in the news and on the minds of many school administrators. Read about what MRSA is and how you can avoid an outbreak in your district. We have also included links on our webpage to allow you the user to download information to place out in your school campuses, plus other handouts and information sheets from the Department of State health Services and our Family and Consumer Sciences Department. Finally, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in conjunction with Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sent out a fact sheet to 113,000 schools across the country.
